The short answer
Most standard homeowners insurance policies in Arizona cover roof damage caused by monsoon storms - wind, hail, microbursts, and the dust-and-debris damage that follows. But "covered" doesn't mean "automatic." Insurance companies routinely deny or underpay storm claims when homeowners miss a deadline, skip the documentation, or accept a lowball estimate.
If you've got monsoon damage, follow this checklist exactly.
What's typically covered
- Wind damage: Lifted, missing, or torn shingles. Cracked tiles. Damaged ridge caps.
- Hail damage: Bruised shingle granules, cracked tile, dented metal flashing.
- Microburst / debris damage: Tree limbs, blown debris, anything that hits the roof.
- Resulting water damage: Interior ceiling, drywall, insulation, and personal property damaged by leaks caused by the storm.
What's typically NOT covered
- Wear and tear (an old roof that finally failed during a storm but wasn't actually damaged by it)
- Pre-existing damage
- Maintenance issues (clogged gutters, missing flashing the homeowner never replaced)
- Cosmetic damage on some policies (some carriers exclude tile chips)
The 4-step claim playbook
1. Document everything in the first 48 hours
Take photos and video of every visible damaged area. Get drone shots if possible. Document the date and time. Save weather reports from that day - the National Weather Service archives every monsoon event by zip code.
2. File the claim within your policy window
Most AZ policies require notice within 30-60 days of the event. Missing this window is the #1 reason claims get denied. Call your carrier the day after the storm if you suspect damage.
3. Get an inspection BEFORE the adjuster arrives
An independent roofing inspection (we do these for free) gives you a documented baseline. Adjusters often miss damage on the first visit; without your own report, you have nothing to challenge their estimate.
4. Have a roofer attend the adjuster meeting
This is where claims get won or lost. We attend 100% of adjuster meetings for our customers. We walk the roof together, point out damage the adjuster might miss, and provide our own line-item scope. The result: claims are typically settled higher and faster than DIY.
Common reasons claims get denied (and how to avoid them)
- "Wear and tear" denial: Document the roof's pre-storm condition. If you have an inspection from the last 1-2 years showing it was in good shape, that's gold.
- Lowball estimate: The first adjuster estimate is rarely the final number. Get a real roofer's scope and request a re-inspection.
- Cosmetic damage exclusion: Some policies exclude "cosmetic" tile damage. Read your policy. If you're high-risk for monsoon damage, switch to a policy without this exclusion.
- Late claim: File even if you're not sure yet. You can withdraw later if it turns out to be nothing.
What we do for North Canyon customers
If you call us about storm damage, here's what happens automatically:
- Free inspection within 24 hours, often same-day for active leaks
- Full photo + drone documentation of every visible damage point
- Detailed written scope you can hand directly to your insurance carrier
- We coordinate the adjuster meeting and walk the roof with them
- If the adjuster underpays, we file a supplemental scope with line-item evidence
- Once the claim settles, we do the work to your roof's pre-storm condition (or better)
The biggest mistake we see is homeowners trying to handle the claim alone. The insurance industry has decades of practice on you. Bring a roofer.
Storm damage claims aren't something you have to figure out alone. If you're in Arizona and need help with a monsoon claim, call us at (602) 469-9479 - we'll inspect your roof, give you a full damage report, and meet your adjuster on-site at no cost.
